Presentation Feedback

We were put into small groups and we each had to present to the rest of the group in turn. At the end the group filled up a feedback sheet to help us with the direction we needed to take and what was missing from our presentaitons
Below is the feedback I got;

What else is interesting about their good that hasn't been mentioned?

  • Advertising
  • Who and why people chose the models of iPods they do?
  • Every one has one?
  • Easy to recognise - most wanted item
  • Secrets - whats hidden on an ipod e.g. guilty pleasures

Is there a flaw in the argument? What do you disagree with and why?

  • Was it actually Apples original idea
  • Illegal downloads

What processes, scenarios, or contexts might improve the potential impact of the concept?

  • How music has changed lives
  • Surveys on who buys and who downloads music illegally

How else might the concept be creatively improved? Any other comments?

  • Look at how they are made
  • Technical advances for the future
  • Can personalise to suit ones self
  • What other products are designed around the iPod?

OBJECT - Ipod - The different between ipod and mp3

An iPod is really just a brand of MP3 Player, with some exclusive differences. Read on to lean more about MP3 Player Vs iPod.

PMP devices, which is short for portable music player, is a term used to describe any digital portable music player that allows you to download or save digital music files (in MP3 format) from your computer or notebook to play on a PMP.
The category of PMP devices have all but replaced the larger Walkmans and portable CD players, not only due to their much smaller size but because you can store hundreds or thousands of songs on them.
Today, digital music players devices come in all shapes and sizes. As if we didn't have enough terminology in this category of devices already, here is another acronym for you — some PMP devices, like MP3 players, are also called DAPs, short for digital audio players.

What is an MP3 Player?

An MP3 player is a type of digital audio player that falls under the broader category of PMP devices. It is a small — often weighing less than an ounce — handheld device that use flash memory for storing MP3 files.
In addition to supporting the MP3 audio file format an MP3 player might also support additional file types such as Windows Media Audio (WMA), Waveform Audio (WAV), Music Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), Ogg Vorbis and other audio formats.
An MP3 player is basically a storage device that contains solid-state memory, likeflash memory, and software that will let you transfer audio files from your computer to the player. MP3 players may also include features such as playlists, radio or Web site streaming, and basic options like being able to choose backlight color, and equalization options. MP3 players most commonly use the USB port on your computer for data transfer however some may plug into the computer's FireWire or parallel port.
Once you transfer the music files to the player they are stored in the player's memory. To transfer music from your hard drive using a basic Mp3 Player is often as simple as copy the files to the player. Most MP3 players are battery-powered and may also come with an AC Adapter for charging. Others may be charged by plugging it in to a USB port on your computer.
Today there are also a host of other consumer devices which have an embedded MP3 player. Some examples include satellite radios, smart phones, PDAs, sunglasses, and even MP3 watches.

How is an MP3 Player Different from an iPod?

The big question then is what's the difference between an iPod and an MP3 player? The answer to that questions is that both are MP3 players, but the iPod is a specific brand of MP3 player, made by Apple that has a specific set of features and design. Since the release of the Apple iPod in 2001,  under the iPod brand Apple has released many variations of its product such as the iPod classic, iPod Touch, iPod Shuffle, iPod Mini, iPod Nano, iPod Touch, and several spin-off devices such as the iPod Photo.
Unlike most mass market MP3 players, the iPods use the Apple iTunes software to transfer music to the music devices. Using iTunes you can store a music library on your computer, burn  music from CD, transfer photos, videos, game and small applications (when supported by the player) and many other features. There are open source alternatives available to iPod users who do not want (or who cannot) run the iTunes software.
DID YOU KNOW...
In 2007 industry statistics show that the iPod has sold more than 110 million units worldwide. This makes the iPod the best-selling product in the history of digital audio players.

The statistics documenting the sale of Apple iPods are staggering. Since iPods became wildly popular in the holiday season of 2003, Apple has sold well more than the huge number of 21 million iPods. The iPods have been sold in various types, as Apple has tightened its stranglehold on the consumer electronics business by including in their line the Nano version of iPods and iPods with special video capability.
That's the marketing strategy for the Apple iPods campaign. Give consumers what they want. Apple has consistently provided the market with new and different types of iPods. Having one of these iPods is not enough for the consumer. Apple wants them to buy iPods of this type and iPods of that type. Before long, Apple hopes that its iPods will completely replace the compact disk as the main source of music in automobiles. For now, they will just have to settle for selling their high-powered iPods in record numbers.
Apple has hit a grand slam with the design of their iPods. The machine does everything well, leaving the competition with little chance of beating out iPods for the top spot in consumers' hearts. Apple has always done it their way, and nowhere is that more evident than in the iPods. Competitors are helpless to create anything that will even compare to iPods. This is due mostly to the fact that Apple controls the digital music market with its powerful music acquisition software, iTunes.
When paired with iTunes, the iPods make for an unbeatable product. With new products on the way in the iPods category and many of the already customer friendly improvements to iPods, Apple does not show any signs of slowing down in the near future. The September release of the Red Nano added another powerful and compelling product to the iPods lineup. For consumers, this is great news. They anticipate only good things in the future. For competitors of the iPods, things are looking pretty bleak

OBJECT - Ipod, It's Success

When the ipod came out, there were a few other MP3 players on the market, but for some reason the ipod took over and has never been trumped since.
This may be to do with its exclusivity, unlike other regular MP3 players, you can only load songs from the Apple music program, 'Itunes.'
Then there is the name of 'Apple' itself, a hugely successful and arguably fashionable icon. The apple logo itself can sell itself through its unique branding and promotion.
Everything about the ipod makes it something desirable; its uniqueness, its sleek and elegant design, its portable and easy to use nature, and its large storage space.
From this, the ipod then developed into more a symbol of style and could be interpreted as 'you aren't cool unless you have an ipod'. Cheaper MP3 players not only were trumped by the ipod, they then became undesirable. They were and still are the 'it' gadget.

ARTICLE ON ITS SUCCESS

hy has the iPod become much more successful than other MP3 players that have been out years before?

Apple has successfully achieved a branding of the iPod like no one else because they were the first to offer an elegant and comprehensive solution between hardware and content. This appears on the front and back ends when creating not only the hardware (iPod) but also the content (iTunes). They were the first to offer a means for listeners to transfer, catalog, and organize their own music, and a mechanism for consumers to listen to, sample, and inexpensively purchase the music they wanted. They were the first to afford the recording industry, producers, and musicians with a marketing and distribution system that provided wide-scale distribution, dignity and rights to the artists, and well-deserved revenue to those parties. Apple also recognized and convinced the recording industry that the internet is a growing medium and provided a means for that industry to access that market.
In addition, by providing an inexpensive means for users to copy their own music onto a cool, user-friendly, and powerful yet petite device, enabled users to have the versatility they never knew: music can be enjoyed in a car, gym, on a train, at work, or at home on one’s stereo system, Apple demonstrated that reasonably copied music is acceptable to virtually all parties; this would eventually lead to increasing purchases as demonstrated by their one-billion downloads. Now TV programs, music videos, podcasts, and other content can be viewed on an iPod.
As shown in the past Apple has a unique way of branding and marketing their products. They have always been able to create a buzz with a well thought out and complete strategy. From the customer’s perspective the iPod with iTunes was not necessarily the cheapest solution, but it was the
Why the iPod Is So Successful, Page 1 of 2best at a reasonable cost. Apple, as with so many of their products demonstrated to the customer that they had a solution that worked, period. The competition was unable to match their solution.
Apple also was successful in keeping their installed base as revenue producing future customers. iPod users must buy their music or videos from Apple. The iPod will not work on download sites such as Yahoo, or the many others available to standard MP3 Players. One would think that MP3 users would prefer an open Platform with the flexibility of downloading content from any of the many MP3 and MP4 sites. But with the Apple’s ever- increasing loyal fan base, they were the first company to offer the full solution in a one-stop shop, and the successful branding targeted at the youth, Apple computer has created the mass market for others to follow.
Apple Computer has done a great job in creating a mass market that did not exist before.

OBJECT - iPod data collection

I would have thought that everyone owned an ipod, but when seeing the results of the questionnaire I realised that since the iphone has been brought out and more and more people now have one, there isn't such a need for an ipod as there is a large enough storage space on the new iphones.
I have purposely not included the ownership of an iphone when researching, despite it having the ipod assessor to it - it is primarily a phone, not an mp3 player.
From what I have gathered, people have had ipods in the past but have since got an iphone and their ipod has come to the end of its life, and there was no need to replace it.
